Fundamentally, modern vehicles have used the same type of windshield since the beginning of the auto industry. A simple, three-layer Saftey design that features industrial strength sticky plastic sandwiched between two layers of specially hardened glass. These windshields are very effective. Our modern windshields have saved more lives than they’ve taken, by far. But as with all inventions, the next wave of technology is right around the corner.
= Gorilla Glass. You may have heard of Gorilla Glass if you’ve ever researched screen protectors for your phone. This is essentially the same material now used to make windshields. There are a number of ways that Gorilla Glass windshields are superior to our current windshields. Their technology offers amazing options that older windshields cannot provide. Let’s take a deeper look at what Gorilla Glass is, how it’s made, and what the future is going to look like once it becomes the standard windshield material throughout the automotive industry.
How Are They Made?
Gorilla Glass undergoes an extensive scientific and complex process to achieve their standard level of strength and purity. For those of you who hated science class, let’s simplify. A Gorilla Glass windshield is constructed by using what’s called a “proprietary fusion manufacturing process”. This process is very precise, and it produces glass with amazing optical clarity, built-in dimensional stability, and a surface quality best described as pristine.
First, a glass composition is created by blending raw materials together which are then conditioned and melted. This molten glass then is put into a trough where it flows over the sides and fuses together at the bottom. Once at the bottom it is drawn down until it forms a flat sheet of glass that is so incredibly thin it can only be measured in microns.
After that process is over, the glass then undergoes an “ion-exchange process”. Basically, the Gorilla Glass is put into a hot molten salt bath which forces smaller ions out of the glass and replaces them with larger ions. When the glass cools these ions are pressed together. This creates an extremely high level of compressive stress within the glass. This compressive stress makes a Gorilla Glass windshield unbelievably strong and resistant to damage.
Why are Gorilla Glass Windshields Superior?
A Gorilla Glass windshield is superior in so many ways, because of its increased strength and clarity. Because the Gorilla Glass is so strong, it takes less of it to build a windshield. This means that the overall weight of a car built with only Gorilla Glass is significantly reduced, including the carbon footprint of the car by a significant amount. If all of the cars in the world were to convert to Gorilla Glass it would be a huge step towards reducing overall emissions and helping in the fight against global warming.
The lighter weight of Gorilla Glass cars also means they will have improved braking, handling, and acceleration abilities. This means that they give the driver a better chance to avoid accidents, which could save countless lives. They also provide brighter and clearer windows that are 50% less likely to crack and can be used for high-tech HUD’s which make it that much easier for drivers to maneuver out on the road.
Gorilla Glass Windshields: The Future of Auto Safety?
It is likely you may drive a vehicle with a Gorilla Glass windshield in the near future. Considering the increased strength and safety of a Gorilla Glass windshield as well as the decreased amounts of pollution, it’s not hard to see the entire automotive industry making the switch before long.
